This section explains the instructions for Care Teams who are setting up Alexa Calling for Family members of their clients or residents.

Overview
Alexa Calling lets Zemplee members reach their family with a simple voice command.
When it is set up correctly:
Members can say things like: “Alexa, call my daughter or Alexa, call my Nurse”. For a complete list of command available – check out the Alexa Calling Commands Section
If the Family has an Alexa App installed on their phone, they will receive a notification from the Alexa App and can accept the call from within the Alexa App on their phone.*
*Depending on how your loved one’s Alexa device is set up, incoming calls to the Alexa App may display a name, member ID, room number, or a combination of these. Please contact Zemplee Support at support@zemplee.com for details.
Family can call back from their phone call log or converse live with their elderly loved one through the Alexa App.**
**Not supported on all devices, supported on iOS devices running the latest iOS.

Checklist
Before you start – please make sure of the following ~
- Zemplee member(s) have an active Zemplee-enabled Echo device in their room or apartment.

There is an authorized family member (or primary contact) who:
- Has a smartphone (iPhone or Android)
- Can install the Amazon Alexa App
- Has or can create an Amazon account

You have the following information for a family member:
- Full name
- Relationship to the client/resident
- Mobile phone number (with country code)
- Consent to receive calls and connect via Alexa.
Step 1: Ensure the Family Member has Download the Alexa App
Ask the family member to download the Amazon Alexa app on their smartphone.
For iPhone (Apple)
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the Search tab.
- Type “Amazon Alexa.”
- Tap the Amazon Alexa app.
- Tap Get (or the cloud icon) to install.
For Android (Samsung, Google, etc.)
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap the Search bar.
- Type “Amazon Alexa.”
- Tap the Amazon Alexa app.
- Tap Install.
Step 2: Have the Family Member Sign In and Verify Their Phone Number
Once the app is installed:
- Ask the family member to open the Amazon Alexa app.
- Tap Sign In and log in using their Amazon account.
- If they don’t have one, tap Create a New Amazon Account and follow the prompts.
- In the app, go to:
- More → Settings → Communication (exact path may vary slightly by version).
- Make sure their mobile phone number is:
- Added and verified
- Correct, including country code (e.g., +1 for U.S.)
💡 Important: This is the number Alexa will use for calls. It must match the number for the family member in Zemplee Contacts.

Step 3: Add or Update Contact Phone Number for the Family Member in Zemplee
From the family member, collect:
- Member’s full name
- Family member’s full name
- Relationship (e.g., daughter, son, niece, friend)
- Mobile phone number (including country code)
Confirmation that they have:
- The Alexa App installed
- Signed in with their Amazon account
- Their phone number saved under Zemplee Notifications
Step 4: Request Zemplee Support to enable Alexa Communications (see How to Add or Update A Family Contact in Zemplee for Alexa Communication for more)
- Email Zemplee Support at support@zemplee.com
- Include details of Family Member added (Organization, Family Contact First Name, Last Name, Phone Number)
- Wait for Zemplee support to update Alexa with family member’s information and activate Zemplee-Alexa Communication. This can take up to 24 hours.
Step 5: Inform Member to test Alexa Calling with Family
Once Zemplee Support has confirmed completion of the setup:

Reach out to the member and ask them to use the feature by saying:

“Alexa, call [family member’s name].”
- Example: “Alexa, call my daughter Susan.”

“Alexa, call [family member’s name].”

Confirm that for the family member:
- The call rings on the family member’s phone and family member receives a call or receives a voicemail on their phone
- Receives an Alexa Notification and can open the Alexa App to connect live with their loved one.
- Can answer and speak to the member on Alexa App.
