What is the Attempting to Sit Alert? Settings Troubleshooting Steps FAQs

What is the Attempting to Sit Alert?

The Attempting to Sit alert notifies the Care Team when a member moves from lying down to sitting up in bed.

Trigger Source: Chest bed occupancy sensor. This alert requires installation of both a chest and hip bed mat (2 bed mat sensors).

Why It Matters: Members may need support when sitting up, especially if they are fall-risk or recovering from surgery.

Care Team Response: This alert warns the Care Team early, so they can help before the member fully leaves the bed. Zemplee sends the alert to the Care Team immediately.  The Care Team can then assist the member safely.

  • Zemplee can also announce via an Alexa (in a member's room) for the member to wait for help.

Tip: The Attempting to Sit alert warns the Care Team early of a member's transition from laying in bed. It occurs before a complete Bed Exit alert. The Bed Exit alert lets the Care Team know the member has actually exited the bed.

The two alerts can be turned on individually. The two alerts can also be turned on at the same time and are complementary.

Settings

The Attempting to Sit alert can be turned on for an individual member in their Alert Settings.

Alexa announcements that correspond to the Attempting to Sit alert can be turned on in a Member's Notification Profile.

Best practice is to set this alert up for high-fall-risk members and train Care Teams to respond to Attempting to Sit alerts with immediate assistance.

Troubleshooting Steps

Step-by-step checklist for caregivers/staff:

Check that the alert is turned on for a member in Alert Settings.

Confirm chest and hip bed mat sensors are properly placed and connected.

Test the alert by simulating sitting up in the bed (remove weight from the chest sensor only while keeping weight on the hip sensor).

Reset or replace batteries of the mats if needed.

Check that Care Team Notification Profiles are set up to receive Attempting to Sit alerts (in-app, email, or text channels).

Escalate to Zemplee Support if issue persists.

FAQs

Can I disable Alexa announcements but keep Care Team alerts?

Yes, you can enable the Attempting to Sit alerts to go to the Care Team in setting up Notification Profiles for the Care Team. You can choose to not enable Alexa announcements for the alert in the Member's Notification Profile.

What’s the difference between Attempting to Sit and Bed Exit alerts?

Attempting to Sit (ATS) Alert

  • Triggered when a member moves from lying down (pressure detected on both the chest and hip mats) to sitting up (pressure only on the hip mat).
  • Requires two mats (chest + hip) to detect this transition.
  • Purpose: Warns the Care Team early, so they can help before the member fully leaves the bed.

Bed Exit Alert

  • Triggered when the system detects that the member has left the bed.
  • Works with either one mat or two mats:
    • One mat setup: The alert triggers when the mat changes from occupied to unoccupied.
    • Two mat setup: The alert triggers when the hip mat becomes unoccupied.
  • Purpose: Lets the Care Team know the member has actually exited the bed.
